Chapter 17

Saguaro Estates, Hell’s Birth Canal’s retirement home, is adjacent to the hospital. That’s one of its selling points, close access to emergency medical care. The entire plot of land used to be a farm, and the hospital was built where they used to raise chickens. The retirement home was built where they used to graze the cows. The architect, for reasons only known to him, kept the barn standing and incorporated it into the retirement community. It was refurbished, insulated, air-conditioned and turned into a recreation center. It’s a lively place for the senior residents to play cards, do jigsaw puzzles or argue about the news. There is also a small library where residents can borrow books on the honor system.

Before coming here, Kong and I checked the medical books at the Archives. Nothing intensely evil jumped out at us. It was frustrating, not knowing what we were looking for. I could only hope that I’d know it when I saw it. Kong had the idea to check the small lending library in the retirement home, since a lot of the books were nonfiction subjects like Living With Diabetes and Reversing Rheumatism.

I wished I could get in touch with Uncle Arthur to find out what, exactly, I was supposed to do. He must have known that something was going on in town right now and that was why he’d sent me the pendant.

There were too many questions and not enough answers—and the stakes were too high for me to mess it up.

I successfully cast the lightening spell (aka pulvinis) to decrease the mass of the huge box of donated books. “Time for your Latin lesson. Recite the verb conjugations,” Kong said as we were carrying the books into the rec room.

“Soy,” I said. “Eres. Es. Son. Somos?”

“That’s Spanish,” Kong said. “Maybe we should have started with one of the simpler romance languages…”

I was going to replenish the reading material anyway, so now was as good a time as any to check out their library and see if I could find the book.

I put the new books out for the residents while hearing their requests and complaints. It seemed like whatever books I bring, they’re the wrong ones. Anyone who complains, I invite them to come to the Archives and get a book of their choosing, but no one ever takes me up on it. I think they just like to complain.

Kong, on the other hand, was in hog heaven. The residents love him, and he gets all the praise and compliments he feels are justly due. “Look at his little whiskers!” and “White paws!” and “He’s a smart one, you can tell by his eyes!”

Like Kong really needs to have his ego inflated any higher.

I meandered into the library and took a look around. It’s a modest library, mostly filled with old paperback novels, but there are a lot of healing books too. The residents have lots of ailments, after all. Healing is a tricky area of expertise. Most spells can’t reverse or stop anything considered a natural bodily process.
